Reading Well in a Distracted Hour

Description

You open an article while the kettle heats, intending to read two paragraphs. Then a message arrives, the kettle clicks off, and the piece is still open—somewhere between the first idea and the next interruption. Reading well doesn’t require perfect quiet, but it does help to decide what kind of attention you can give.

Choose a smaller promise

Instead of telling yourself you’ll finish the whole piece, choose a stopping point: the introduction, one section, or the end of your cup of tea. A smaller promise is easier to keep, and keeping it makes it more likely that you’ll return. There is nothing lesser about reading an article in two sittings.

Give the article a chance

Before switching tabs, read far enough to find the writer’s central question. A strong opening can take a little while to show what it is making room for. If you’re interrupted, leave the page at a heading or sentence that tells you where to begin again.

Keep one thought

When you finish—or pause—notice one idea you want to carry with you. It might be a question, a distinction the writer made, or simply a sentence that changed how you were looking at something. That small act of attention can make a short reading session feel complete.
